Look for the 'message in a bottle', to protect your son or daughter. Please remember to give a urine sample at every antenatal visit. Your urine can show early signs of pre-eclampsia. Every year in the UK, almost 70,000 women and their families are affected by pre-eclampsia. For many women, the first time that they ever hear of the disorder is when they are being taken into hospital to be monitored, to be induced, or for a caesarean section. Fortunately, for the majority of women, their experience of pre-eclampsia is a mild one, but for many others the experience can be traumatic. Pre-eclampsia is much more common than most people think – in fact it is the most common of the serious complications of pregnancy. Pre-eclampsia can be a dangerous, even life-threatening condition, which is still too poorly understood to be preventable. At Action on Pre-eclampsia, we believe that all pregnant women should be informed about pre-eclampsia, because recognition of the signs and symptoms aids early detection which, in turn, reduces the risks for mothers and their unborn babies. One of the key symptoms of pre-eclampsia is the existence of protein
in your urine. There is a 'message in the bottle', and this campaign
is about encouraging women to attend their antenatal appointments and
to ensure that they have their urine tested for protein.
